One of the trends that starts of sounding like "right thing to do" and ends up being a cost savings you can show your CFO is the whole green data center movement. In my regular reading this week, I came across an interesting piece of information tucked into an article by Liam Eagle reporting on a specific data center company's press release, but within it, something you might find useful.
TrendPoint sent the Web Host Industry Review a press release, and Liam Eagle did a great job of extracting some value from the release. If you're just starting to consider how to implement a green strategy, the report goes into four main points of consideration:
- Set an energy budget.
- Virtualize servers.
- Equalize heat and cooling balance.
- Manage to the metrics.
Eagle's quick to point out that this isn't rocket science, and yet, within this simple set of points are some good ideas to frame the overall high points of a greening project. Will this be enough to launch a project manager down a cost savings trip to success? Not necessarily, but reading the article and the press release might offer up some food for thought.
