Nova Spivack has a bold vision of where he sees desktop computing going. He says that desktops will become a hosted web service. Given our own Nick Saber's recent issues with cloud computing, maybe you'll be skeptical. And yet, there's something to Spivack's assertions.
In an article posted to ReadWriteWeb, Spivack says that our browser will swallow up the desktop as we understand it. This is corroborated by a video I saw from Mozilla (makers of the Firefox browser) showing off their concepts for Aurora, as imagined by Adaptive Path.
Spivack goes on to say that the desktop's focus will shift from information to attention, that users will go from being librarians to day traders, and that collective intelligence will drive what he calls the Webtop. There's a lot to this thinking, and when coupled with ideas on where enterprise computing is going, as well as ideas on how companies will attempt to reach out and drive awareness of their products and services (the concept formerly known as marketing), it might bear further examination.
For now, see what Nova Spivack believes is the future of the desktop.
