Let's admit it to our geekier selves: hearing about really cool big monster computing platforms is fun. It's like hearing about Big Blue beating Kasparov. You suddenly start wondering when all that power will trickle down to YOUR enterprise platform. A great article over at CNET by Nick Heath reports on the world's largest particle accelerator.
Sure, we don't all have one of those in our data center, but listen to these stats:
- Processing power: just shy of 100,000 CPUs
- 1,250 megabits per second upstream and downstream data transfer (1,000 times faster than your home connection).
- Passes 15 petabytes (15 million gigabytes) of data through those channels.
One manager on the project says that it'll be almost 20 years before that kind of stuff trickles down to YOUR data center (unless you work at a particle accelerator project). But it sure is interesting to read and see what that means for where data environments are going. It's part of what drives us to understand what's coming next for your data center, and why we're hosting The Next Data Center in October in Atlanta.
