Seven Ways to Use Digital Video for Your Business

Chris Brogan, VP Strategy & Technology, CrossTech Media.

5/12/2008

I'm a bit obsessed with my Flip video ( http://www.theflip.com/products.shtml ) camera, and it turns out, I'm not the only one. After my talk at ITEC Houston, I had no fewer than five people approach and ask me more about the camera than many of the other points I made. Why? Because they saw right away how simple it was to operate, and they understood my points to how their businesses might use video. Here are seven ways you might incorporate digital video into your business:

  • Document conditions at remote locations. Field employees of all kinds might appreciate this. For example, I used to support 40 remote telephony nodes all over the US, and there were countless times when we wanted a better understanding of what our technician might see. (For this job, I might recommend a live streaming video option, like a Nokia N95 equipped with a streaming account with Qik.com).
  • Instructional information. I'm not great with directions written out on paper, and sometimes, it's just too tricky to explain in words what's easier shown. Shoot a quick video with how-to information. If it's a publicly available product, put a copy up on YouTube with a URL at the end to give more information.
  • Practice presentations. Shooting yourself on camera gives you a better opportunity to understand how you come across during your sales pitch, or your informational performance.
  • Hiring Process. Companies like Standout Jobs are promoting the use of video job offerings and video applications. Is it right for your organization?
  • Promotions. Throwing a customer event? Hand out a few video cameras and get video to be edited and used in promotions for your next experience, or as remembrances to send to those who attended.
  • Record important meetings. There's a lot of information that doesn't get captured in the minutes reports from meetings. Is that information valuable enough to you that you might want a video for later review? Might be good for planning and creative sessions.
  • Product Demonstrations. If your product or service looks great in action, shoot a video and include that as a demonstration. The team at BlendTec had probably the least interesting thing to sell in the world: blenders. And yet, by launching Will It Blend, a site where they ground up golf balls, glowsticks, Wii remotes, and even an iPhone, this company drove tons of sales, built leads, and even spun out an improbable merchandise line based on the videos to go with their main product of selling blenders.

Video isn't for every company, and there are lots of considerations before rolling out a larger scale program (for example, videos eat up storage space quickly, and bandwidth becomes an issue, too), but there are certainly some interesting applications that are worth considering, given the relatively low price of the initial equipment required.

Oh, and if you want to pick up a Flip camera to get started, here's an Amazon link to the one I carry around. If you want to talk more with me about your company's video strategy, drop me a line at [email protected] , and we can see how video might or might not fit with your company's plans.
