What Will Enterprise Mashups Look Like?

Chris Brogan, VP Strategy & Technology, CrossTech Media.

5/27/2008

Once we make our data line up nicely with other data, all kinds of cool things can happen. This is the promise of mashups, but it's only recently that these applications have started to seem a little less R&D and a little more interesting for enterprises to consider. We're not all the way there yet, but there have been changes.

I was looking through the Intel Mash Maker Gallery and trying to get a sense of the things people were making. A good many were map-meets-data, where we mash up the location of Craigslist apartments for rent, for instance, or ease-of-use improvements on existing sites. Good starts, and we can start to see how these might make business sense, such as the LinkedIn Contact List improvement. This is one way to skin the cat, but there are other tools, such as a tool merging Outlook contacts to your LinkedIn or Plaxo accounts, for instance.

As organizations look for operational velocity, finding ways to make your data useful, accessible, and ready to integrate with other platforms should be considered as part of your architecting considerations. Shifting to web-enabled platforms, even inside the firewall, and building more metadata, as well as APIs to help integrate and port, are also topics to consider.

Finally, for a deeper look at the space, check out this article by Dion Hinchcliffe, who has quite a list of resources and companies working in the enterprise mashup arena.
